IDEAS & INSPIRATION

I love painting and doing art work -- it is my soul food!  Equally, I love the sea, and being around water. That's why I love the sport of kayaking:  I can get closer to the water.  My favorite thing to paint is reflections on water.  The other thing I have noticed I'm attracted to is how light falls on things. I want to capture that light no matter what the subject.

I feel so fortunate to be living so close to San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.  The beauty here is amazing.  Everyday, I can look out onto the bay see a different scene to paint. I have often said the sky and water is a painting in motion.  It's pure magic, changing moment to moment.  I will never run out of ideas to paint.
A DAY AT MY ART STUDIO

Before I start a painting, I usually spend several days searching for reference material or taking my own photographs for the subject. I work up sketches to get the best composition then transfer the sketch to my canvas. I love an early start to the day. I look out my studio window I can see San Francisco Bay. What a sight! Seeing the water sparkle with the sun shining on it. Sailboats, ferryboats, and fishing boats, sailing back and forth, as if it's a rythmic dance of perfect harmony. I putter around tidying up, mixing my colors of paint and selecting music for my CD player.

Another favorite activity is to listen to audio books. It can transport me to another world, and before long I have whole sections done on my painting.  When I'm in the flow, it's hard to stop even for lunch.  But at some point I stop working and take a break, and many times walk down to the beach to soak in the view of the bay and recharge my batteries. I come back to the studio and work until 6:00 pm, sometimes later.  I clean up the studio, and go home to relax, eat dinner and socialize with friends. Why do I paint? I have to. It feeds my soul. I'm in heaven when I am painting.
